Due Tomorrow? Do Tomorrow.

Lyrics

the charming that i see on every weekday morning
we carpool to highschool and feel that everlonging
i'm grateful cuz truly without you i'd go crazy

  and in your shitty van¹
  we make the biggest plans
  we will reshape this earth
to live the lives that we deserve

  you can count on me
and i can count on you
  let's make some big mistakes
  let's break some fucking rules

    this feels so possible
    this stand is popsicle²
let's make a wish and blow it out

the charming that i leave to go home every evening
the virtue of curfew³ is that it's meant for breaking
and i will still call⁴ you to tell you how i'm feeling

  and in your shitty van
  we make the biggest plans
  we will reshape the earth
to live the lives that we deserve

  you can count on me
and i can count on you
  let's make some big mistakes
  let's break some fucking rules

    this feels so possible
    this stand is popsicle
let's make a wish and blow it out

and if you burn in hell⁵
then i will burn with you
i'd rather suffer for the truth

and if they drag me down
i know you'd drag me out
cuz i would do the same for you

and when i think of us
and all the things we've done
these magic vibes i can't describe

  with every photograph⁶
  and every winding path
the story that we live is ours to write

Song Notes

thank god for friends
there's this thing about writing songs alone... you forget to harmonize with yourself
so when dave listened to the album he was like "where are the harmonies"
and i was like "oh shit i forgot the harmonies"
so here he is, harmonizing with me
and also guesting none other than Michael himself and his partner, Meaghan

i want someone to look me in the eyes
and tell me my "popsicle" lyric is fucking stupid
because even though i am 1,000% serious i don't think most people will get it
and most people will think i'm stupid
but do you... you don't think i'm stupid right?

there are two references to "Everlong" in this song.

i love this song. it is very important to me. at one point i was looking at a batch of like ~50 demo tracks, going "how tf is this going to be an album" and gradually the "teenager" concept emerged. once i realized it, i dove into works that i hoped would inspire me. i reflected on my own life when i was a teen. this song is about the feeling i had carpooling in high school. 90% of the time with my friend Bart, sometimes with my friend Brian who had an unbelievably shitty green van we called the turtle. it was awesome. i don't know if i'll ever feel that way again.

this song, to me, is the heart of Eighteen.

Recording Notes

i love when a song is "heavy" but in a way that encourages you to turn up the volume. idk if that makes sense, but sometimes things are too aggressive // scooped // bright // compressed so they just flatten out into bland noise.

definitely some big muff fuzz going on here (perhaps of the Triangle variety?) and the first four seconds of the song are actually the Satisfaction Fuzz, a pedal that genuinely sucked until i "fixed" it years later by adding what i swear is a missing diode in the circuit.
